In the vast majority of cases, these mild malalignments resolve by themselves and do not require treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, sometimes\nthey do not correct spontaneously, and, if not treated during childhood, they\ncan persist and present as genu varum (bowlegs) or genu valgum (knock-knees) in\nadulthood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the knee\njoints and sometimes the ankle joints are loaded in an unbalanced way, which\nleads to damage of the cartilage and subsequent arthritis and pain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/radler-ortho.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/o-beine-x-beine.jpg\" alt=\"x-beine o-beine genu varum Genu valgum\" class=\"wp-image-822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/radler-ortho.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/o-beine-x-beine.jpg 300w, https:\/\/radler-ortho.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/o-beine-x-beine-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/radler-ortho.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/o-beine-x-beine-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common causes\nfor bowlegs and knock-knees are genetic predisposition, uncorrected\nmalalignment in childhood, and malunited fractures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnosis is accomplished\nby performing clinical examination and obtaining radiographs. The radiographs\nare measured and analyzed (malalignment test), and the joint angles are\nevaluated. The exact location of the deformity is found using conventional or\ndigital (software-guided) deformity analysis. The aims are to correct the malalignment and\nto bring the mechanical axis to the middle of the joint for balanced loading.\nIf early changes are already observed, the malalignment can be slightly\nover-corrected to unload the damaged cartilage. Depending on the location and\ndirection of malalignment, a small wedge of bone can be resected from (closing wedge)\nor inserted into (opening wedge) the bone. This can be done on the femur (thigh\nbone) or tibia (shin bone) depending on the location of the deformity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Realignment of the\naxis of the limb can protect the joints and can prevent or markedly postpone\nthe need for total joint reconstruction. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In children, it is perfectly normal to see bowlegs or knock-knees at certain times during growth.
