Bacteria can enter the bone from the\noutside (e.g., through injuries or open fractures) or can enter the bone and\njoints via the blood supply (especially in children).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Septic Arthritis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Septic arthritis can\noccur in toddlers and young children. Bacteria enter the joint through the\nblood stream and can damage the joint or, if progressive, the growth plate. The\naffected joint is usually painful and used less and is often red and swollen. Although\nantibiotics can successfully fight these infections, it is sometimes necessary\nto surgically open and rinse the joint. If a growth plate is permanently\ndamaged, shortening and malalignment can develop during growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Osteomyelitis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the infection is\nwithin the bone, we speak of osteomyelitis. The pathogen (bacteria) can enter\nthe bone via the blood supply or directly, through puncture wounds or open\ninjuries\/fractures. Treatment depends on the bacteria and includes\nadministration of antibiotics and d\u00e9bridement (surgical removal of devitalized\nor contaminated tissue) and resection (surgical removal) of the affected bone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transient Synovitis <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Transient synovitis almost always affects the <a href=\"https:\/\/radler-ortho.com\/en\/kinder\/huefterkrankungen\/\">hip<\/a> and can present with symptoms similar to those of early-stage septic arthritis. However, transient synovitis of the hip, also called <em>coxitis fugax<\/em>, is only an inflammatory reaction and usually disappears with rest and anti-inflammatory medication. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although rare, infections can cause orthopedic problems.
